A 58-year-old American woman has been killed by a shark while snorkeling in the Bahamas.

The Pennsylvania woman was attacked Tuesday afternoon (local time) in the waters of Green Cay near the capital Nassau, Bahamian police said.

The US citizen stopped on a cruise in the island state and went on a snorkeling trip with her family.

“The tour operators and her family tried to save the woman,” police said. Without success – she suffered serious injuries on the left side of her body. When she was brought ashore, rescue workers pronounced her dead.

The family of five was on a week-long cruise aboard Royal Caribbean’s Harmony of the Seas. Royal Caribbean confirmed the death and offered “support and assistance” to the victim’s family.

In 2019, a young American woman was fatally attacked by three sharks during a dive in the same area.
