A Ukrainian woman who lived in Meppel has been arrested in her native country on suspicion of espionage. She is said to have received money from Russia to undermine Ukrainian society from within.

The Ukrainian security service SBU suspects the woman from Luhansk of collaborating with the enemy reports De Telegraaf. After the outbreak of the war, she fled to Meppel, where she worked as a cleaner.

When the woman returned to Ukraine she was charged with high treason and espionage, although she has only been charged with the second crime. During the search, a telephone and several SIM cards were found, which the woman allegedly used to support actions against Ukraine.

The woman also had $5,000 and many documents about land ownership and permits for the construction of homes. That could still serve as evidence of high treason, according to Ukrainian media. The woman stated that she wanted to travel to Rostov, in the south of Russia, with these belongings.

The Ukrainian security service assumes that the amount of money comes from the Russian intelligence service in return for providing services. She was therefore arrested and faces a prison sentence of 15 years to life.
