Wolverhampton Wanderers: Moutinho and Costa leave – backdoor at Traoré

Manager Hobbs hands out praise

Matt Hobbs, sporting director at Wolverhampton Wanderers, has provided clarity: João Moutinho (36), Adama Traoré (27) and Diego Costa (34) will leave the club in the summer. The expiring contracts of the three professionals will not be extended – at least for two of the three players mentioned, this is set in stone.

Hobbs said of Moutinho, who has been with the club since 2018 (212 appearances), with the greatest appreciation: “In my opinion, Joao will go down in history as one of the best players (…). He’s been an integral part of the team throughout the time he’s been here. He has been instrumental in our success over the past four or five years. The club can only thank him.”

In the case of Traoré (194 games), however, the door to staying with the “Wolves” is still open. Apparently it is now up to the Spanish right winger himself, who came from Middlesbrough in 2018 for 20 million euros and was loaned to FC Barcelona in the second half of the 2021/22 season. “Adama is a player we would like to keep and we are still speaking to him. His contract has now expired but that doesn’t mean there isn’t a chance to reach an agreement yet so talks will continue. He’s probably earned the right to know what else is out there,” explained manager Hobbs.

Attacker Costa, on the other hand, will definitely have to leave the Premier League club after a year after scoring a goal in 25 games: “Diego came after Sasa Kalajdzic was injured and has settled into the club incredibly well during the time he’s been here, inserted the values and the culture. He showed on the pitch that he still has a lot to offer,” said Hobbs. “I can’t thank him enough for everything he’s done throughout the season – he’s been a really important part of what we’ve achieved, which is to stay in the Premier League.”

Nevertheless: “It was the right time to part with him because he had a one-year contract. There have been some internal discussions and we felt this was the right time. I have no doubt that Diego will surely find another club based on his performances. If a club calls me to inquire about the person, they will only get praise from me.”
