Wolfsburg collected a bitter dampers in the Champions League. The Lower Saxony saw no country against top team Barcelona.
In the Champions League, the women from VfL Wolfsburg have few chances to reach the Champions League semi-final. In the quarter-final first leg against FC Barcelona, the Lower Saxony clearly lost 1: 4 (0: 1) and were completely unhappy over long phases.
VfL defense player Caitlin Dijkstra (26th minute) initiated the defeat and unhappily steered the ball into her own goal when trying to clarify the ex-Wolfsburg Ewa Pajor.
Irene Paredes (50th), Salma Paralluelo (52nd) and Sydney Schertenleib (89th) then ensured clear conditions. Barça even gave chances for further goals. Due to Janina Minge’s header (79th) after a corner, the Wolfsburg hopes are still minimally present.
“We played our game from the start, had a lot of possession of the ball. We did that from the first to 90th minute,” said Barcelonas Pajor at DAZN. The center striker moved to Catalonia in Wolfsburg in the summer after nine years. Her conclusion: “It was a nice game.”
In the second leg on March 27 (from 6.45 p.m. in the LiveTicker from T-Online) Wolfsburg needs a little miracle to move into the top four. As early as 2023, VfL had to cope with a painful bankruptcy (2: 3) against the Catalan star ensemble. At that time, VfL had given the victory against Barça in the final in Eindhoven after a 2-0 lead.
Barcelona exerted pressure in front of 13,158 spectators in the Wolfsburg Volkswagen Arena from the beginning. VfL keeper Anneke Borbe’s first good opportunity, the free kick from Maria León, was no problem for Wolfsburg’s keeper (4th).
As a “mammoth task”, VfL coach Tommy Stroot had described the Spanish top team around world footballer Aitana Bonmatí in advance, against which his team was particularly defensive against the domestic setting.
Barça dominated the action on the square, Wolfsburg rarely came to the train. On the other hand, goalkeeper Borbe had to intervene a few times in the first half, but the own goal could not prevent teammate Dijkstra from the nearest distance.
Even after the break, Barça was the game -determining team and shocked the hosts with a double strike through Paredes and Paralluelo.
The wolves hardly appeared aggressively – but then Minge suddenly headed out of nowhere. But the remarkable final chord then belonged again to Barcelona through troubleshooting body.
Final whistle – The game is over. Barça beats the Wolfsburg women 4: 1 and clearly shows the VfL the limits. The Catalans were at least one class better today.
89th minute – An added time of four minutes is displayed.
88th minute – hit to 4: 1 for Barcelona. Goal scorer: Tearning body
Barça makes short process with VfL. Supertalent base body increases to 4: 1 after a counterattack. The Wolfsburg women are visibly frustrated.
87th minute – Graham Hansen dynamically moves forward when countering, but Borbe certainly fends off her 14-meter shot.
78th minute – gate for Wolfburg to 1: 3! Goal scorer: Minge
A little ray of hope for VfL: Mining comes to the ball after a corner kick at the penalty point and pushes it placed in the left corner. After all, Wolfsburg operates some cosmetics of results.
