Coach Stephan Lerch from VfL Wolfsburg warned of the difficult task in the second leg after the 1-0 win against OL Lyonnes in the Champions League. “We know that that was the first step, we took it. We will also try to appear brave in the second leg. But we know that it will be very intense there,” said Lerch before the duel in France on April 2nd (9 p.m./Disney+) on Disney+.

Thanks to a goal from Lineth Beerensteyn (14th), VfL inflicted their first defeat of the season on the favorites and record winners, but they were also lucky, especially in the second half. “We were pushed back and we defended passionately. That’s why we’re very happy to have come out with this result,” said the VfL coach.

With a little luck, VfL could have scored a second goal, but Lerch didn’t want to hear about a missed opportunity. “For me, the joy that prevails is that we won 1-0 here. It’s not every day that you win against Olympique Lyon. Now let’s just enjoy the moment,” he said.

The victory also ended a black streak for VfL: Wolfsburg had recently lost six times in a row against Lyon, including the finals in 2018 and 2020. The win on Tuesday makes him look forward to the second leg with confidence, said Lerch: “We have gained a lot of self-confidence today – and we will need that too.”
