Rumors are swirling that Pep Guardiola could be the next coach of the Italian national football team. The association has confirmed that talks are underway.
Once a powerhouse in international football, Italy finds itself in a precarious situation again. The “Squadra Azzurra” had to watch the 2026 World Cup from home, having failed to qualify for the tournament for the third consecutive time.
Following the national team’s elimination in the playoffs against Bosnia and Herzegovina, head coach Gennaro Gattuso resigned, prompting the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) to seek a new leader.
Among the names being discussed is Pep Guardiola. The acclaimed Catalan coach recently departed Manchester City after an impressive ten-year tenure.
Now, FIGC President Giovanni Malago has confirmed that Guardiola is the desired candidate for this new chapter in Italian football.
Guardiola as the Italy Coach? President Restricts Expectations
In an interview with “Vivavoce,” Malago stated that talks with the 55-year-old coach are indeed happening. He further mentioned that the federation is willing to exceed its financial boundaries to secure Guardiola’s leadership. “We’ve made exceptions regarding the prominent name that is currently circulating,” he noted.
However, he tempered expectations: “It was vital and correct to continue discussions with Guardiola, but that does not mean we are not considering other candidates.”
Additionally, he confirmed that Andrea Pirlo and Roberto Mancini are also in the running for the position. Mancini, notably, led Italy to victory in the 2021 European Championship. “Perhaps there will be a surprise. Wait a few days and you’ll find out everything,” he hinted.
Italy faces tough challenges in September against high-ranking opponents like Belgium, Turkey, and France, which makes this coaching decision all the more crucial.
