Matt Cameron left Pearl Jam. In a statement on social media, the drummer announced that that he will leave the band after 27 years. “A lot of love and respect for Jeff, Ed, Mike and Stone that they invited me to the band in 1998 and gave me the chance of my life, fulfilled by friendships, art, challenges and laughter,” he said. “I am the crew, the team and the fans all over the world grateful. It was an incredible journey. More follows. I thank you all with all my heart.”
Pearl Jam recognizes Cameron’s influence
In a separate explanation, the band – consisting of Jeff Ament, Stone Gossard, Mike McCready and Eddie Vedder – paid tribute to the time together with Cameron: “From one of our first musical heroes in the bands Skinyard and the mighty sound garden to the first demos in 1990, Matt Cameron was a unique and truly powerful musician and drummer,” wrote Pearl Jam.
Cameron played at Soundgarden from 1986 to 1997 and returned for a short phase from 2010 to 2017. He also temporarily worked with Queens of the Stone Age, but never officially joined the band. Pearl Jam represented the longest period of his band membership.
A drum god on a farewell tour
“He has decisively shaped Pearl-Jam Live shows and studio recordings for the past 27 years,” said the band. “It was a deeply important chapter for our group, and we always wish him all the best. He will be missing very much and remains our friend in art and music forever. We love you, matt.”
Pearl Jam finished her one -year -old Dark Matt world tour in May. The live appearances supported their twelfth studio album with the same title. “Matt Cameron is a damn drum god. Everyone bows before their skills and what they can do,” Dark Matter producer Andrew Watt told Rolling Stone in 2024. “Nobody else could sit down and play these drums. I am so lucky enough to have the individual traces of the album. I only belonged completely with the drum track. I love Matt Cameron.”
