AZ’s ambition is splashing when it comes to Mayckel Lahdo. The 19-year-old winger was taken over from Hammarby IF last week and signed a five-year contract. “I want to develop myself here,” says the fast winger, who can also play in the striker.

AZ had very little choice in the right wing position last season. Yukinari Sugawara acted several times as a stand-in attacker, but still has more traits of a right back. During the winter break, Kamal Sowah was brought in with great fanfare, but his input remained minimal. And so it was clear that AZ had to move in the transfer market.

AZ coach Pascal Jansen is therefore delighted with the young Swede. “We have taken a good first step for the right-wing position. We are also looking closely at how we can strengthen the midfield and the attack.”

Max Huiberts spoke of a real attacker at his presentation. “He has a lot of speed, a good dribble and a good individual action. We think he will develop so quickly that he can quickly start playing his matches at AZ. He has to step up the competition in that position and he is not running for that away.”

AZ started preparations on Monday with a test day and was on the training field for the first time yesterday. The first practice match is scheduled against PEC Zwolle on Saturday 2 July. In two weeks, AZ will leave for Epe for a training camp (from 4 to 9 July). There is a practice match with PAOK Saloniki on the program
