According to information from RTL/ntv and sport.de, Florian Wirtz’s extension at Bayer Leverkusen is perfect. Record national player Lothar Matthäus welcomes the national player’s decision and assesses FC Bayern’s chances of a transfer.
“If I were in Florian Wirtz’s place, I would stay in Leverkusen until the 2026 World Cup. So if he were to extend it, that would make perfect sense to me,” wrote Matthäus in his “Sky” column.
A change of such magnitude would ultimately cause a lot of upheaval that would leave the player unscathed. “Kylian Mbappé is the best example, who as King of Paris in Madrid has disappeared a little over the last six months,” noted Matthäus.
In Leverkusen, Wirtz could instead prepare optimally for the World Cup in his “familiar, protected environment”. Matthäus also emphasized: “With Leverkusen, Wirtz has a club that is one of the top 10 in Europe and can beat any team.”
According to information from RTL/ntv and sport.de, Wirtz has expanded its working paper in Leverkusen, which expires in 2027. The “kicker” also reported the agreement.
Bayer, however, did not yet confirm the extension upon request. “If anything changes to the current contractual situation (until 2027), Bayer 04 will of course transport this as before and in agreement with the Wirtz family,” the club explained.
Wirtz to FC Bayern one day? That’s what Matthew says
FC Bayern’s chances of signing Wirtz are poor, at least for the summer of 2025.
“Of course, Bayern would also like to see Wirtz in their own ranks, but FCB’s top priority is to extend the contracts of the current pillars – first and foremost, of course, Jamal Musiala and Joshua Kimmich, followed by the transfers,” wrote Matthäus .
Time will tell “whether Wirtz would like to go to Munich, who in my opinion are on a par with Leverkusen, or whether he has other plans.”
