Liverpool FC can win the top game at Tottenham. The team can also thank Florian Wirtz.

Liverpool FC scored three important points in the Premier League four days before Christmas Eve. The “Reds” won 2-1 (0-0) at Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday evening. Thanks to the success in London, coach Arne Slot’s team has moved up to fifth place in the table and is now level on points with Chelsea FC in fourth place in the Champions League.

At the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, a serious foul by ex-Bundesliga star Xavi Simons became the first upset of the game. The Tottenham player hit his Dutch compatriot Virgil van Dijk with an open sole on the calf. Referee John Brooks initially pulled out a yellow card, but changed to red after the video assistant intervened (33rd minute).

With the advantage, Liverpool then had a direct chance to make it 1-0. Florian Wirtz was denied by Spurs goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario (36′). The break went goalless.

After the break, Liverpool forced the lead. Alexander Isak, who came on as a half-time substitute, put the ball in the Tottenham goal after a pass from Wirtz (56′). It was the first official assist of the current season for the former Leverkusen player. He was indirectly involved in a goal against Sunderland earlier this month when he forced an own goal.

Bitter for Liverpool: Isak was injured by the goal and had to leave the pitch around a quarter of an hour after being substituted on. Jeremie Frimpong came on for him.

Shortly afterwards, Tottenham hit the crossbar through ex-Frankfurt player Randal Kolo Muani (64′). Then, Hugo Ekitiké, another former Eintracht professional on the other side, made the decision. Richarlison’s goal came too late for Tottenham (83′). Because Cristian Romero was also thrown off the pitch, the home team ultimately had to finish the game with nine men (90+3).
