Throwing balls of white socks at your friends can be fun, but a real snowball fight is much more fun. What can we expect from the weather in the winter of 2025/2026? Jaco van Wezel, meteorologist at Weeronline, looks ahead.

Meteorological winter starts on December 1. According to Jaco, the winter season will probably be milder than normal. But there is also a chance of colder periods with snow and ice fun. Get the sled from the attic!
Soft and wet
Nowadays, a southwest wind almost always blows in Zoetermeer during the winter. That brings rain and mild air from the ocean. Jaco thinks that this will often be the case next winter. In February, southwesterly winds are likely to be stronger than normal. The result: a turbulent and wet time.
Colder air
In the second half of December and January, colder air comes from the north and east to the Netherlands, says Jaco. “This means there is a greater chance of snow and ice, but for skating fun the supplied air must be clear enough. Low clouds and fog can dampen the frost.”
The question remains whether you can also get your skates from the attic. Jaco emphasizes that the reliability of weather forecasts over such a long period is limited.
