Winter and the energy crisis: Winter sports fear failures due to the energy crisis

A month before the Alpine skiers start the new World Cup season on the Rettenbachferner, the FIS and the IBU are warning of the effects of the energy crisis on winter sports. Those responsible expect shifts and cancellations.

Many winter sports are no longer possible without snow production and floodlights, which is why the FIS and IBU are now sounding the alarm in view of the energy crisis. Both associations expect restrictions due to rising energy prices. However, the international biathlon association relies on family cohesion in the World Cup to prevent competition cancellations. “In the past, we have always managed to find replacements at short notice in the biathlon family. That’s why no competition was canceled during the corona pandemic,” explained Christian Winkler, IBU Director of Communications.

In addition, precautions are already being taken: The organizing committees of IBU events are called upon to examine energy saving options and to make appropriate adjustments, added Daniel Böhm, Sports Director of the IBU.

FIS expects criticism of events

The FIS not only fears direct restrictions due to the energy crisis, but also problems with the acceptance of energy-intensive major events this winter: It is not easy if people have to save water and electricity, but competitions are being prepared and held next door. But we are optimistic that we can handle this.

Associations are preparing for problems

In general, FIS Secretary General Michel Vion assumes that World Cups could be rescheduled at short notice to avoid cancellations. “If a cancellation comes a month before the planned date, this is no longer possible,” said the FIS Secretary General.

There is already a working group at the IBU that is developing specific formats for action. The aim is to be able to react promptly to problems with the organizers and local organizing committees. The winter sports associations are trying to carry out the World Cup program as normally as possible despite the crisis.
