The Trier basketball players struggled in a fast-paced game and ultimately lost by a score of 85:108 to the Baskets from Oldenburg.
After a balanced first half, Oldenburg played strongly in the third quarter and in the end deserved to win against disappointing Trier. An Oldenburger was hard to stop.
Fast-paced game with lots of points
For the first time this season, the Trier team were considered favorites against the previously winless Oldenburg team. The game started at a high pace, and the first quarter was already characterized by many offensive actions on both sides. The Gladiators led by coach Jacques Schneider went into the break with a narrow 50:51 deficit.
After the break, Oldenburg turned things up. The Trier team found it increasingly difficult to keep up with the home team’s pace. Although Trier always came close to a few points, the clear 85:108 defeat was still deserved.
As is often the case, there is still an Oldenburg arm in between: Here Marc Hollersbacher is blocked by Michaele Kyser.
An Oldenburger towers over
Christopher Clemons from Oldenburg was unstoppable this evening. The point guard scored an outstanding 52 points and was accurate from both the basket and the three-point line. The Trier defense always had big problems stopping the American native. Clemons played a large part in Oldenburg’s first win of the season.
The best player on the pitch: Oldenburg’s Chris Clemons (left) defends Trier’s Eli Brooks in the scene.
Returnee Eli Brooks plays inconspicuously
The Trier team had high hopes again Eli Brooks. With 22 points, the summer newcomer was once again Trier’s top scorer, but was repeatedly stopped by the Oldenburg defense. Brooks would certainly have imagined returning to his old place of work differently. He was still under contract in Oldenburg last year, but didn’t play many minutes there due to injuries.
In the end it was a weaker three-point rate, less luck and an outstanding Chris Clemons, who gave the Gladiators their first defeat in the BBL. Doubly bitter for the Trier team: If the Gladiators had won the game, they would have one Basketball Bundesliga record set: A promoted team has never won the first five games in a season.
Nevertheless, the Trier team can be satisfied with the start of the season with four wins from the first five games.
This is how it continues for the Gladiators
The first defeat of the season for the Gladiators certainly came later than many fans had thought at the beginning of the season. It was also a matter of time for coach Jacques Schneider that it had to come at some point. The Gladiators have the chance for their next victory in the BBL next Sunday when they host SC Rasta Vechta in their home SWT Arena.
