Giel Vermeulen of Bakkertje Deeg in Heusden has won the battle for The Best Brabant Sausage Roll 2022 among the professionals. His creation was chosen as the tastiest by the jury on Wednesday evening. The winner received the coveted challenge trophy at De Rooi Pannen in Eindhoven from barrel talker and entertainer Rob Scheepers.
Giel is the successor of Lars van Dongen from Wagenberg, the winner of 2019. It was the 25th time that the competition for the tastiest Brabant sausage roll was held.
To be honest, says Giel, he kind of saw it coming. He has worked for a former winner and became enthusiastic about the sausage roll competition. After finishing in the top 10 last year, he made some adjustments to the dough and even bought a special machine for it.
“We already have about 800 sausage rolls ready for tomorrow. But I expect that we will sell thousands in the coming weeks,” says the 22-year-old winner.
Innovative sausage roll, without rules
This time, an extra category was created for the anniversary edition: the innovative sausage roll. Everyone could bake as creatively as possible, there were no rules with regard to shape, composition or taste. Pierre van der Zee from Beek en Donk finished as the winner in this category.
His sausage roll is made from beetroot, which Pierre smoked for hours. The sausage bread dough is therefore pink.
The first prize in the VMBO student category went to Raff Willemsen from Hoeven from Markland College. Thomas Merkx from Made van Curio from Breda won in the MBO student category.
This year no fewer than 41 home bakers participated. Because of corona, many people started working at home in their own kitchen, or they baked in sheds and storage cubicles. The only 13-year-old Djörn van Werde from Heeze was the winner in the Best Brabant Home Sausage Roll category. He baked them in the barn and defeated all the adults with his creation.
95 participants
A total of 95 Brabant sausage bread bakers took part. Ten professionals, five home bakers, five VMBO students and five MBO students were allowed to proceed to the final in De Rooi Pannen in Eindhoven, where they had to bake their sausage rolls on Monday.
All sausage rolls have been judged by eighteen judges. A total of 320 sausage rolls were tasted. Attention was paid to, among other things, the minced meat filling, the bread, what the sausage roll looked like, the bite of the roll and of course the delicious taste.
