Windmills and N34 central to Borger-Odoorn election debate

The party leaders in Borger-Odoorn will debate the provincial road N34 and windmills this afternoon. They discuss a possible doubling of the road, and discuss the question of what should be done with the wind turbines, and whether they can possibly be shut down.

The provincial road N34 is known for the traffic accidents that happen there. Next Dolmen Highway the route is therefore also called the ‘death road’. Proponents of doubling say that widening the road provides more safety, while opponents point to the consequences for nature. The work and road traffic would cause extra nitrogen emissions that descend in the Natura 2000 areas around this road, such as the Drentsche Aa.

The concerns expressed about wind turbines mainly concern the De Drentse Monden and Oostermoer wind farms. The wind farm is located in the area of 2e Exloërmond, Nieuw-Buinen, Drouwenermond and Gasselternijveen, but the windmills can also be seen kilometers outside this area. Local residents are concerned about the use of the area fund, which is intended to improve the quality of life in the area around the wind farm. In addition, there is concern about the low hums produced by the windmills: they would cause health problems.
