Amanda Anisimova surprises number one in the world and moves into the Wimbledon final. Iga Swiatek makes it less exciting against Belinda Bencic.
For Amanda Anisimova, the move into the Wimbledon final felt “not real”, and Iga Swiadek was also surprised after a merciless idea.
On a hot and overshadowed day in the All England Club, the American Anisimova and the Polish Swiatek have made an unexpected final at the prestigious classic law.
Anisimova landed a coup against the world ranking Aryna Sabalenka and after a 6: 4, 4: 6, 6: 4 on Saturday (5:00 p.m. CEST) after her first Grand Slam title.
Swiadek gave the Swiss Belinda Bencic no chance at 6: 2, 6-0 and stands before her sixth triumph at a major tournament.
“It doesn’t feel real. I died out there. I don’t know how I did it. She is an inspiration for me,” said Anisimova and was celebrated by the spectators: “So many people cheered me on. I just want to say thank you.”
Swiadek surprised herself on her unloved surface. She would never have expected to “play the final here,” said the Polish in the on-court interview: “I’m very excited and super proud. Tennis continues to surprise me. I just enjoy it.”
Anisimova arrived in the top of the world
It is a premiere for Anisimova and Swiatek, both are in the final on Church Road for the first time. On Saturday (5 p.m. CEST) the world ranking twelfth and number four in the world are fighting for three million pounds of prize money and Venus Rosewater Dish.
The three-time major winner Sabalenka, on the other hand, experienced a bitter disappointment. She has to continue waiting for her first Wimbledon final and her first title for lawn. She could have been the first player since Angelique Kerber and Serena Williams 2016 who reached three major signals in one year – Sabalenka left the square in Melbourne and Paris.
Anisimova has finally arrived in the top of the world with the final. In 2019 she had already reached a semi-finals at a Grand Slam tournament as a teenager in Paris, but had failed at the Australian Ashleigh Barty at the time. Two years ago, the daughter of Russian emigrants took a break due to mental problems, also to escape the pressure of the tennis circus.
Two emergencies in the stands
The day before the men’s semi-finals between Jannik Sinner and Novak Djokovic as well as Carlos Alcaraz and Taylor Fritz, a game developed at a moderate level.
The match was overshadowed in the first set of two incidents, twice a woman in the spectator grandstand was obviously not good at temperatures around 30 degrees.
Anisimova made fewer mistakes than Sabalenka on the square and kept his nerves in an exciting third set despite three match balls.
Swiatek mercilessly ends Bencic fairy tale
Swiatek was the dominant player from the start and ended Bencic’s fairytale journey, who had fought into the Wimbledon semi-final for the first time 15 months after the birth of her daughter Bella.
She only needed 71 minutes for her success. Swiatek will contest her first Grand Slam final on Saturday this year, in Melbourne and in Paris, she was eliminated in the semi-finals.
