In the round of 16, he was lucky, in the quarter -finals he showed his class again: Jannik Sinner is in the semi -finals of the tennis tournament in Wimbledon after a convincing appearance against Ben Shelton. After the 7: 6, 6: 4, 6: 4, he is against the winner of the Novak Djokovic game against Flavio Cobolli for a final ticket.
He owed the bad luck of his quarter -final opponent that Sinner was still in Wimbledon. Grigor Dimitrov led against him in the round of 16 with 2-0 sets and was the better player than in the third set of the right pectoral muscle in the third set. Sinner was on, even though he hadn’t won a sentence. He said honestly: “It doesn’t feel like a win.”
Nevertheless, there was a chance for him to reach the third Grand Slam final this year after the triumph at the Australian Open and the final defeat against Carlos Alcaraz at the French Open. In Wimbledon it would be a premiere for him. However, from the start, Shelton showed how dangerous he could become a Sinner. The American played as strongly as in the first four rounds, especially with his own serve, he could not be cracked at first.
Return player without chance – Sinners Tie Break premiere succeed
The most important thing for Sinner, however, was that he made a significantly better impression than against Dimitrov – and that his rigid right elbow, where he had slightly injured in the quarter -finals, apparently did not cause any major problems. Like Shelton, the Italian kept himself harmless – although he made his impact games much more confidently. At 4: 4, his opponent had only won a point as a collector.
It was correspondingly logical that the decision had to be made in the first sentence in the Tie Break. Shelton had won all four versions in the course of the tournament, for the first time for Sinner in Wimbledon that it was 6: 6. Shelton achieved the first mini break to 2-0, but it was the last point he did – Sinner won the Tie Break 7-2.
Sinner hits Ellenbogen problems back
After that, however, the world ranking suddenly wobbled. Shelton earned his first two break chances – but he had no opportunity to use them: Sinner took the lead. After that, the match took a course again as before: the impeller dominated. At 3: 2 and 15:15, Sinner got a hard serve on the racket frame, the elbow hurt him. The top seed now looked thoughtful and took his racket in the left hand at every occasion.
Sinner fought with himself and his body – but the problems were obvious, his game clearly suffered from the incident. However, Shelton made unnecessary mistakes against the favorites of the favorites that had to be slower and thus unintentionally helped that everything was still in the row at 4: 3. And Sinner had won important time, his elbow recovered and he got better again.
The bandaged right elbow caused Jannik Sinner some problems.
In the next game, Shelton was able to ward off a breakball, but in the following serve game Sinner developed the first set ball – and he used it thanks to a further backhand error by the 22 -year -old. The number one in the world won the first break and the second set 6: 4.
Sinner in the most important moments on hand
Shelton was 0-2 after sentences and, despite a strong appearance, looked largely without a chance. Sinner showed his whole class, made hardly any mistakes and was extremely stable on his own serve, he made the “Big Points”. At 4: 4 and 0:30, the triple Grand Slam winner kept the nerve and won the game, Shelton had to serve against the loss of match. And there too, Sinner struck at 30:30, while his opponent failed – Shelton was able to ward off two match balls, but after 2:18 hours of Sinner, Sinner ended the game to 6: 4 in the third set.
“The feelings are now very different from Grigor, I’m very happy. Wimbledon is the most special tournament in the world and hopefully things will go so well for me in the next match”said Sinner, who also spoke about his problems in the elbow: “In the match you try not to think about it. It has gotten better and no excuse. I’m looking forward to the semi -finals.”
