Willy van de Kerkhof is lyrical about Peter Bosz: ‘Can make PSV champion’

Club icon Willy van de Kerkhof is happy with the expected appointment of Peter Bosz as the new coach of PSV. Bosz succeeds Ruud van Nistelrooij, who suddenly left before the last league match of the past season because he felt too little confidence from the club management, the coaching staff and the group of players.

“I think that Bosz is a very good choice by the management of PSV,” Willy said on Saturday morning in the radio program Weekend on Omroep Brabant. “That can also be said once. He is one of the few Dutch coaches who was available at the moment and also one who fits a club like PSV.”

He is confident that Bosz can once again give PSV the national championship. That has not succeeded in the past six years, much too long for the top club that PSV wants to be. Bosz is often said that he has not become champion before in his coaching career. But that was not really realistic at clubs such as Heracles, Vitesse, Bayer Leverkusen and Olympique Lyon. Bosz hopes to win the national title for the first time at PSV.

“You become a champion by scoring more goals than you get against them.”

Bosz is known as an offensive coach. Someone who sometimes puts a lot of risk into the game with his teams. Very different from the game Ruud van Nistelrooij wanted to see. That was more based on collapsing and playing football from the switch. “This will be a slight culture shock”, Willy nods. “But we all want to see attacking football, don’t we?”

According to him, Bosz’s playing style does not have to clash with the desire to become champion again. “You become a champion by scoring more goals than you get against them.”

“I think there will be about five or six mutations in the selection.”

Although the arrival of Peter Bosz at PSV seemed to be coming for days, it took a while before the final agreement was reached. Willy has an idea why that is. “Every trainer has notes on his vocals. He will not get the key to the safe, but he must get some reinforcement. Then it is a matter of weighing up the possibilities. Every trainer will look: what do we have at PSV, what do I consider desirable and who do I want to keep? I think that’s what most conversations have been about.”

The ex-international does not think that Bosz will get a cartload of new players because of his attractive playing style. “Not a whole bunch of players, but I think about five or six.”
