Willem II hopes to soon be able to expand the stands housing the fanatical supporters by more than five hundred places. The club will submit a permit application to the municipality of Tilburg on Monday. If it is up to supporters club chairman Jan van den Dries, the expansion will happen as quickly as possible. “You have to strike while the iron is hot.”
General manager Merijn Goris sees plenty of growth opportunities in the King Willem II Stadium. “Although not every match can be won, it is clear that Willem II as a club is on the rise. The stadium is completely sold out again this season, even immediately after the relegation. That is not only a great compliment to and from our supporters, but also represents a huge opportunity,” he writes in a message about the future plans.
Willem II opts for an expansion of the areas behind the goal where the hard core is located. There will be several rows of chairs towards the canal. The KingSide now has a capacity of 2,460 places and more than 500 places will be added. The total capacity of the King Willem II Stadium will then reach 15,200 places.
“The growth is literally audible in the stadium.”
Goris: “In the run-up to this application, we have had intensive and constructive consultations with both the municipality and the police, and are confident that this process will be completed positively. With more than 500 additional supporters on the KingSide, the growth will literally be audible in the stadium.”
If the permit is granted and if there is room in the competition program, Willem II wants to start work quickly. Goris not only looks at the KingSide, but also at other parts of the stadium. “For example, we completed the sector expansion on the long side last year, and we are now working on plans to do the same on the Gool side (sections L, M, N, O). We also want to further improve the experience for the loyal supporters on that side.”
“All praise for the plans.”
Supporter Jan van den Dries hopes that the expansion will happen as soon as possible. “At Willem II, all home games are almost sold out. If you want to implement a proactive policy, and that is what the club wants, then you should not wait but expand now. All praise for the plans.”
