According to Trump, the agreement should actually have been signed earlier. The US president told Fox News, Axios and CNN that the deal would normally have been completed before or just after the Israeli bombing of Beirut. On Truth Social, he wrote that the attack “shouldn’t have happened.”
Behind the scenes, efforts are now being made to finalize the agreement today. According to De Keyser, this would involve an electronic signature, because representatives of both countries can no longer meet physically at such short notice. Moreover, the American president remains hopeful that the deal will be concluded on his “presidential birthday”.
Yet Iran remains on the brakes for the time being. A source close to the Iranian negotiating team previously stated that the agreement will “certainly not” be signed within the deadline imposed by Trump.
