Will Hansi Flick be Hrubesch’s successor?

Who will succeed Horst Hrubesch as women’s national coach? Almuth Schult has someone in mind who, as a former DFB head coach, doesn’t yet have a new job.

The currently clubless national soccer goalkeeper Almuth Schult has made a surprising and pragmatic suggestion as to the successor to interim national coach Horst Hrubesch. “There is still a coach who is committed and is under contract with the DFB. If you don’t find anyone, maybe it will be Hansi Flick,” said the 33-year-old ex-Wolfsburg player as an ARD expert on Friday before the Nations League -Semi-final of the German team against France (1:2) in Lyon.

Flick was released as men’s national coach last September. The 72-year-old Hrubesch will retire after the Olympic Games in Paris this summer at the latest. If he missed out on taking part in the Olympics, he would at best be willing to continue to help out for a short “transitional period”, as he said, but sees other demands in the event of an impending upheaval. The DFB women can still get their ticket to Paris with a win on Wednesday in Herrenveen against the Netherlands (in the live ticker on t-online).

“We are prepared to act,” said sports director Nia Künzer again about the personnel, but did not comment on Schult’s Flick suggestion or other names. They did their homework at the DFB.
