“Avatar: Fire and Ash” has reached $760 million. Strong Christmas business in the USA with 88 million. The billion could fall by the weekend.
James Cameron’s third “Avatar” film remains a box office success. According to current forecasts, “Avatar: Fire and Ash” is expected to reach the $1 billion mark at the box office worldwide. Revenues already amount to $760.4 million, as reported by “The Hollywood Reporter,” among others. The numbers are as of December 28th, a few weeks after the global theatrical release in early December 2025.
Strong Christmas business in the USA
The film performed particularly well in the USA over the long Christmas weekend. “Avatar: Fire and Ash” grossed $88 million there. The film has grossed a total of $217.7 million in the United States so far. An additional $542.7 million was sold internationally. Taken together, this results in worldwide box office receipts of around 760 million US dollars.
Billion mark within reach
Industry observers assume that the film could exceed the billion mark by the end of the first weekend in January 2026. In doing so, Cameron would once again prove that his science fiction saga can reach a mass audience even in the post-pandemic cinema market. The director himself had previously expressed doubts as to whether similar successes to the predecessors would still be realistic after COVID-19 and in view of possible franchise fatigue.
The future of the saga depends on success
Cameron himself has emphasized several times that the success of this film will largely determine whether part four and part five will actually be made. “I don’t know if the saga goes beyond that. I hope so,” he told Entertainment Weekly. If “Avatar 4” and “Avatar 5” are not realized, he announced that he would at least make the planned storylines public. The scripts are already available, the 71-year-old director reported in an interview with “TV Movie”.
Predecessors with record successes
The first Avatar from 2009 still holds the record as the highest-grossing film of all time, grossing over $2.9 billion. The sequel “Avatar: The Way of Water” grossed around $2.3 billion in 2022 and ranks third on the all-time best list. The new film continues the story of Jake Sully and Neytiri, whose family faces an aggressive Na’vi tribe that threatens the future of Pandora.
Weakest start of the trilogy
In its first weekend, “Fire and Ash” grossed around $345 million worldwide. This gave it the second-best worldwide theatrical release in 2025 behind “Zootopia 2,” which opened with $497.2 million. The third “Avatar” edition did not record record numbers. The reviews of the third “Avatar” edition were also more mixed overall. With 68% positive reviews on Rotten Tomatoes, “Fire and Ash” achieved the lowest rating in the film series.
