After almost a year and a half of high viewing figures and a contract extension, Today Inside is final here to stay. And that makes Wilfred Genee definitively the new Gerard Joling. “It’s unprecedented.”
Almost seventeen years ago, a real ice dance war broke out between RTL 4 and SBS 6. The SBS variant Sterren Dansen op het IJS with Gerard Joling as presenter won the battle and from that moment on he was the channel’s main star for years. And with a salary of 1.5 million euros per year, he became the best-earning presenter of SBS.
Wilfred new Gerard
That title now goes to Wilfred Genee, who is achieving enormous success with Today Inside. He and his colleagues from VI signed a new contract last week, earning them 1.2 to 1.4 million euros a year.
Tina Nijkamp, who was the channel boss of SBS 6 during the heyday with figurehead Gerard, points to her ratings juice channel on yesterday’s score. VI was number two at half past nine with 947 thousand viewers (21 percent market share). “It remains unbelievable how quickly this program has become a mega hit.”
Unprecedented for SBS 6
In the commercial target group of 20 to 54 years, Today Inside also scores ‘giga numbers’, according to Tina. “Yesterday 22.6 percent. That is unprecedentedly high for SBS 6, which is almost Star Dancing on the Ice, Star Jumping and K2 seeks K3-like figures. That’s how long you have to go back in the viewing figures books.”
She continues: “Say comparable to the market shares that Gerard Joling always scored for SBS 6. Hart also benefits from VI and has 756 thousand viewers, more than Op1 and Jinek.”
Football show does not score
Wilfred’s football talk show on Veronica continues to score poorly; yesterday 200 thousand people watched (4 percent). “Whether that comes back next season will completely depend on the sponsor. He probably wants to continue for another season,” says Tina.
She continues: “And despite the poor grades, it is nice for Veronica to have a Dutch program in the schedule. Otherwise it will go in the direction of RTL 7 and it will very quickly get the feeling of a road game channel for the viewer.
