Wiebes, Vollering, Cecchini and Niewadoma: the gravel world championship is filled with champions

The second edition of the World Cup will be held on Saturday 7 and Sunday 8 October. Lorena Wiebes is ready to make her European champion jersey shine, just won in Belgium. Expectations for Italian athletes are high

The province of Treviso on Saturday 7 and Sunday 8 October will be colored with the shirts of national teams from all over the world. The Gravel World Championship will attract a top-level audience, and all enthusiasts will be able to enjoy a unique spectacle, surrounded by the UNESCO heritage hills.

The Elite Women’s race

In the women’s race, which will be held on 7 October, all eyes will be on Lorena Wiebes, crowned European Elite Women Champion on Belgian-Flemish soil on 1 October. Already holder of the European champion’s jersey, she will be ready to fight for the rainbow jersey, hoping to outclass reigning UCI world champion Pauline Ferrand-Prévot, who missed last weekend’s European Championships due to illness.

Below is the altimetry and GPX track of the Women Elite route.

The Italians

Elena Cecchini, protagonist of the 2023 European Championship in Drenthe, will be present at the start. For the athlete from Udine, gravel represented a great novelty: “I discovered gravel recently – continues Cecchini – and I immediately fell in love with it. I think that even from a training point of view it is a useful discipline that can bring many benefits. As an athletic gesture it is very similar to what is done on the road, plus you can train in the midst of nature, away from traffic and the stress of cars.”

Another newcomer to the world of gravel racing is Gaia Realini, Lidl-Trek athlete. The young girl from Pescara has a top-notch list of achievements in the world of cyclocross and she dives into this new experience with the curiosity of those who love getting mud on their wheels. Silvia Persico and Barbara Guarischi will also be at the start

The other favorites

The European champion Lorena Wiebes and the Dutch Demi Vollering will be present at the Gravel World Championship, who in 2023 won: Strade Bianche Donne, Amstel Gold Race Ladies Edition, Flèche Wallonne Féminine and Liège-Bastogne-Liège Féminines. Also worth keeping an eye on is Kasia Niewiadoma of the Canyon/SRAM Racing team, who has achieved several podiums in the UCI Women’s WorldTour this year, including third place in the Tour de France Femmes avec Zwift.
