The state of Berlin has rejected a memorial plaque for Romy Schneider. The opinion of BZ editor Johannes Malinowski.

What would Berlin be without the people who have had a lasting impact on culture and life here over the years?

More than 3,300 plaques commemorate celebrities who lived or worked in Berlin. Scientists, politicians, but also famous Holocaust victims. And a lot of actors.

Ironically, film legend Romy Schneider, who was temporarily at home in Grunewald, should be denied this honor. One of the greatest German-speaking actresses of the post-war period. Which still enchants millions of TV viewers today.

The jury did not give a reason for the decision. The commemoration in our city should be made transparent and democratic. Nobody understands the decision to refuse Romy Schneider the posthumous honor.
