Why do so many flags flutter in the United Kingdom? And why is that so controversial?

In the United Kingdom there are a striking number of flags in recent weeks. Normally you only see something like that at large royal or military matters. But now there is something completely different going on. Is it “patriotism” or a “hijacked” protest against the migration problem? The sudden bidding of flags over the channel has a very charged meaning anyway.
