Why did walrus Freya have to die? Mental problems for Strand Larsen? And why is the brightly lit Pieter Smit Bridge an advertisement for the province? Read the 7 best reader letters of the past week here

Walrus Freya, soccer players Suslov and Larsen, and the situation in Ter Apel. Our readers have an opinion about everything. Below is a selection of the best readers’ letters from the past week.

Why did Freya have to die?

As a child I was not so fond of humans, I was and am more of an animal person. Just as if I already sensed that man was destroying nature, I did my best to do everything I could to save animals and nature. And now that we see again how enormously selfish people are, no longer show any respect for nature and animals, the walrus Freya had to die!

Pure murder, not euthanasia because the beautiful animal was not sick. No, it was in the way of humans, so it’s easier to shoot such a hugely innocent animal. I am ashamed that I belong to the human race. We’re destroying everything, look around you, this world is coming to an end and we (not me, I don’t want to cooperate) with all of us!

Great footballer?

What a relief, that piece about Tomas Suslov in the newspaper from last Tuesday (‘ Groningen level is nasty to Wormuth ‘, 23-08). This boy thinks of himself as a great football player, something he also read every weekend in the football reports.

In the Netherlands, you are quickly found to be good if you score or produce an assist. If you score ten goals, you have to play in Orange and in a foreign competition. All those so-called toppers like Ziyech, Van de Beek, Mahlen, they were all sitting next to the trainer on the bench last season. The new FC Groningen trainer wants to ensure that the team plays well and Suslov is part of that. That is quite a switch for these future ‘world toppers’.

Water well

It was actually a disguised advertisement, the article about digging a well in your own garden (‘ Groundwater well in demand for watering the garden ‘, DvhN , 22-08). The prices were mentioned, it was mentioned how the popularity of the wells is increasing, and for what kind of garden it is a good idea to drill a well.

And the article did not mention the disadvantages of drilling a well: that for your own gain, after all, the motivation is only the cost, you use water that belongs to everyone. And: that the attitude of taking for one’s own gain what actually belongs to everyone is at the heart of all problems on Earth, from biodiversity crisis, to climate crisis, to pollution. Besides clean air, water is our most precious asset. Hitting wells should be prohibited. Private individuals can also think about a garden that needs less water, and then not by laying tiles again. That’s exactly what we need to do. See, for example, operation Steenbreek.

Pieter Smit Brug

To my great, unpleasant surprise, this morning I saw a large photo accompanying the article ‘ Pieter Smit Bridge over A7 bathed in light ‘. It says that if you drive on the A7 in the evening, you will be treated to a wonderful spectacle. It is an advertisement for a street festival arranged by the province of Groningen. Everyone is requested to use as little energy as possible and then this! In the energy crisis that we are officially and clearly in, it is a mystery to me how the province can do this.

As for it Newspaper of the North I don’t think it’s appropriate that you make such a large and positive article that takes up half the front page of the ‘Groninger part’. It feels like a kick in the shins of the many people who are already, or at the latest in the coming cold months, in serious trouble and will have to choose between heat and food with in mind Can they afford to pay the rent at all?

The millions for Larsen Beach

What an attitude of technical director Fledderus towards FC Groningen striker Strand Larsen. That this striker wants to leave is quite normal, to be able to sign a much better contract abroad than now with the FC. I think it’s perfectly normal for Larsen to publicly complain to the press. And then I read, when Larsen came here, that they would be happy if they could catch 10 million euros from a club for him in a few years. They don’t know anything about that at FC.

And now with an improved offer from Mr Fledderus, that can never compete with those foreign clubs that now want to bring Larsen in. The player was not allowed to leave for the 10 million euros offered, then 11 million euros were offered, and Fledderus wants another 12 million euros.

Where is the end? The mental problems and the stress are already present with the player. And a sports psychologist is already being called in by Larsen. That you let it get this far, Mr Fledderus. And if you can still keep Strand Larsen, then you have a chance that he will throw the ass against the crib after 31-08. Just think back to the transition of former player Suarez. Fledderus, you just have to wait until Larsen walks out the door after 2024 for nothing.

Save Creation

CDA leader Wopke Hoekstra has met for a very long time about the coalition agreement, including the plans for the problems regarding nitrogen. You would think when you talk about it with others for so long and put your signature to the coalition agreement, that you will stick to it. Nothing could be further from the truth, as it turns out. The opinion polls show that the CDA is not doing well, so Hoekstra shows his best side. He’s going to slide. We will never get there with politicians like this who think more about their own seats than about their own endangered country. Our country needs people to tackle the nitrogen crisis. Save creation and our future.

On all fronts

Doctors Without Borders offers emergency aid in the Netherlands for the first time in fifty years because the Dutch government is so late. I would like to add: on all fronts!
