It is very sad how Denise van der Laan is bullied by her mother-in-law Monique Hansler in her soap opera on SBS 6. Why did she remain loyal to Mike for so long? “I had one hope.”

The naive Denise van der Laan is treated in a dismal way in the TV soap about De Hanslers on SBS 6. She has to pay a lot from mother-in-law Monique Hansler, while Denise’s lover Mike Hansler watches slavishly. We now know that those two have broken up, but why on earth did Denise stay with that family for so long?

Soak off

Denise hoped against hope that Mike would break away from his dominant mother, she says in the Party. “I was in love with Mike and love is blind. When you are in love, you choose your man. I also had a great time with him in Spain. I thought: I can build a future with him. I hoped so.”

She continues: “But yes, it is painful that that is not possible. Of course there are people who say: I warned you. But you still hope, he is 35, that he will see the light a little. Like: I choose my partner…”

Not the real one

It’s very clear that Mike always puts his mother first. “I have something like that, because that’s what I learned: if a man doesn’t make an effort for you, then he’s not the one. You need a man who really makes an effort and will chase you. I’m not going to chase a man anymore.”

Mike also did not intervene when Monique did not want Denise to put her things in the moving van. “I thought: I’m part of your family now, so why can’t my clothes come with me? We’re all moving together, aren’t we? I didn’t like hearing that either. And then again in the evening with dinner. About how I cut an onion.”

‘I was fed up’

Denise is happy that she is that mother-in-law from hell no longer has it in her neck. “At some point you get tired of it.”

She concludes: “It’s okay. At one point I started standing up for myself. I had been sad for a year and a half. I gave up everything. My house. My job. Now it’s just time for myself.”
