‘Why are traffic obstacles becoming less and less visible?’ † Question answer

Car editor Niek Schenk answers: ‘Road authorities soon find themselves in a dilemma when designing roads. On the one hand, they want to guarantee optimum safety by alerting drivers to dangers. But on the other hand, they want drivers to be distracted as little as possible by overly noticeable elements on and along the road. That is why it is increasingly being decided not to make these kinds of obstacles too noticeable during the day. By providing them with reflectors, they still stand out in the dark when headlights shine on them.’
