Why are there those circles on the Tamboer in Hoogeveen?

If you take a walk through Hoogeveen, you’ve probably seen them before, but probably never thought about their meaning before. The ‘Search Het Uit!’ editorial team received the following question: ‘What is the meaning of those green circles at the Tamboer theater in Hoogeveen?’

The green circles have been on the roof and the gate of the theater since the renovation of the Tamboer in 1997. The theater dates from 1960 and GGH Architecten from Amsterdam was commissioned by the municipality of Hoogeveen to renovate the Tamboer. The design was completed in 1995 and the new Tamboer was delivered in 1997.

To make it clear to the public where they should be in the new theater, Jan van Munster was asked to mark the walking lines with light elements, in order to create a visual connection between the old Tamboer on the Hoofdstraat and the new Tamboer. Those have become the luminous circles.

“The two circles form a visual connection between the original Tamboer on the Hoofdstraat and the later extension with the large hall that is a long way to the back”, says Eric Huijten of GGH Architecten when asked. “This is how people experience that this is all part of the Tambour.”

At the time, the circles contained a green neon light that lit up as soon as it got dark. Whether they still do it, Huijten does not know.
