Who will win the Run van Gieten, will Velocitas take its fourth title in a row and will ACV and Hoogeveen remain in the lead? | tips from the sports editor

Running in Gieten, a northern field korfball derby in Nijeveen and perhaps the fourth championship in a row for Velocitas: here are the tips from the sports editors!

Gieten is completely dedicated to running for the fifteenth time on Saturday. Then the Magnesium Run van Gieten will be held, in which participants can participate over several distances. The event can no longer be ignored on the running calendar in the Northern Netherlands. The organizing committee wants to get young and old, able-bodied runners or participants with a disability moving.

Walk for people with intellectual disabilities

For the little ones, a run of 250 meters or 500 meters is on the program and the school championship of Aa and Hunze for the older youth is held in the 1000, 1600 and 2000 meters. People with intellectual disabilities can participate in a separate run over 1000 meters. In addition, longer distances of 6 and 10 kilometers are on the program from 11 a.m., while a half marathon and the ultraRun van Gieten are also run over 50 kilometers. The program lasts until the end of the afternoon.

In the second game of the field competition, the korfball players of DOS’46 at home in Nijeveen have to get to work right away. The northern derby against leader LDODK from Gorredijk and Terwispel is on the program there on Saturday evening from 7 p.m. DOS’46 won the first competition match convincingly against last-placed TOP. In the indoor competition of the Korfbal League, the Drenten won the last match against LDODK.

Velocitas can become champion at Achilles 1894

In amateur football it may be the weekend of Veloctas 1897. The team of the trainer duo Simon Cageling/Erik Wormmeester is certain of the title in 2L Saturday with a win over Achilles 1894 in Assen. And you can safely consider that championship, if you do not include the two corona seasons, as the fourth championship in a row, after Velo decided to opt for Saturday football in 2017.

Chairman Sip Zwerver is still cautious. “We’re not there yet. But if it happens, we will have a small party with the staff and the group of players when we get back from Assen, but the big party will be celebrated on Saturday 20 May. With artists and all the trimmings.”

In 2017 Velocitas, besides FC Groningen, still the only club from the North to ever win the KNVB Cup in 1934, chose Saturday as the match day for the flagship. That choice seems to be the right one, because in 2018, 2019, 2022 and most likely also this season, Velo finished first in the competition. ,,We knew we had a good group of players”, Zwerver analyzes that success, ,,but we didn’t expect to be back in the first division so soon. All the more beautiful!”

Grijpskerk and Pelikaan S can also do good business

Velo is not the only team to cheer. Grijpskerk can also become champion in 3C on Saturday, but that takes a little more: Groen Geel has to lose points against Niekerk, who closes at the bottom, and that doesn’t seem likely. More fun in the Westerkwartier. In the first division, Pelikaan S must keep its championship dream intact against Blauw Wit’34, one of the competitors in the title fight. That duel in Oostwold starts at 3 p.m.

In the third division on Saturday, ACV is of course still in the title race. The people of Assen will receive Sportlust’46 from Woerden at Catawiki’s own sports park, from 2.30 pm. Hoogeveen, leader in the fourth division on Sunday, has to visit SJC in Noordwijk. It will probably also be a weekend of sadness in South Drenthe, because HZVV, Alcides, Germanicus and VKW can all be relegated.
