Which colors will be trending in Spring/Summer 24?

Blue, yellow, warm or cool beige, bright pastel shades and strong colors – this is what summer fashion 2024 will look like.

The international sourcing fair Première Vision Paris makes available more than 11,000 leather and fabric samples at each edition and is the first fair to give a guide to the key colors of the coming seasons. These recommendations are therefore invaluable when it comes to identifying the colors that will best express the zeitgeist.

Neutral tones are defined by different shades of white, from taupe to gray. In prints, the backgrounds are more neutral or cooler, with beige toned blue. On the other hand, shades of beige for solid color fabrics are becoming warmer, ranging from light caramel to a darker tone. Desolina Suter, fashion director at Première Vision, explained in an interview with FashionUnited that this temptation to use warmer shades of beige “fits solid and durable quality with a sustainable consumption approach”.

The browns, ochres, turmeric, reds and terracotta tones of Summer 2024 are full of meaning. They correspond to a need for naturalness, for anchoring in reality, in the tangible and for a connection to nature. The intensity of the pigments derives from the influence of the earth on human nature – the effects of the earth’s crust, seismic waves, bark – but also from the numerous innovations in plant-based dyes.

New pastels inspired by the dream of a digital paradise

Neutrality is challenged by the arrival of yellow, which embodies the desire to bring light and solar energy into the color spectrum. This yellow can be very acidic, bright, bioluminescent, almost pastel or even clayey, as if soiled by the earth or burned by the sun. As a result of this bath of light, new pastel shades emerge, fresh, flowery and sometimes luminous: azure, violet, pistachio, nude.

Magenta, a recurring theme following the success of the pink Valentino Fall Winter 2023 collection and the Barbie film, gives way to coral red and orange. This rich shade has a magnetic, powerful, deep and almost sacred appeal.

Blue: all-rounder and star of the season

The color blue is making a real comeback. The hue, traditionally associated with the male gender and symbolized by a banker’s shirt or a sailor’s suit, is reinventing itself. In addition, it is a color that can be worn anywhere in the world and does not have a negative image in any country, which cannot be said of other colors.

For Spring/Summer 2024, it transcends its commercial, universal and timeless value and comes in myriad variants: turquoise, black-blue, royal blue, and so on. But the most outstanding is undoubtedly the Klein Blue, a direct reference to the world of art, through the work of visual artist Yves Klein.

The impact of fiber recycling on spring/summer 2024 trends

Textile fiber recycling techniques result in less definite, somber, downright uncertain appearances, “as if the fashion world had decided to embrace the concept of the in-between and the mystery that comes with it,” says Desolina Suter. Grey-pink, mauve, khaki and green-grey are all signs of a certain sophistication, more or less somber and generally reserved for winter.

It remains to be seen which suggestions will be favored by brands’ creative directors and buyers. The first answers will be available at the beginning of October after the Spring/Summer 2024 Fashion Weeks.
