“What kind of retarded thing is this?”

René Froger shoots out of his shoe in front of De Telegraaf’s camera. He is annoyed by a question from reporter Jordi Versteegden. “What kind of retarded thing is this?!” exclaims the Grandpa Topper.

The Toppers were recently in the news somewhat negatively because one of their concerts was canceled due to a ‘disappointing’ savings promotion from the Jumbo. The three other concerts did continue as usual, namely last Friday, Saturday and Sunday. “We have never sold out our tickets so quickly,” it sounded.

Critical question

Evil tongues claim that the Toppers just aren’t that way anymore hot to be. Telegraaf reporter Jordi Versteegden confronted the gentlemen behind the scenes of the song festival last weekend.

Jordan in it movie: “Finally, what would you say to all those people – I hear it again today in the corridors – who say: ‘Yes, the hype is a bit over.’ What would you like to say to those people?”

Rene angry

Gerard Joling believes nothing of it. “Who are those people? Point them out.”

Colleague Jeroen van der Boom: “Who says that?”

Then René Froger, the founder of the concert series, explodes. “Who says that then? Because I think that’s kind of retarded. If you just stand here for three evenings and more than 200,000 people come… What hype is over?”

“Why hype?”

In any case, it makes no sense to speak of a hype now, says René. “Look, a hype would have been a year and a half, that was a hype, but this has been around for almost twenty years now, as you say.”

“I can do my fiftieth Toppers this year. If you then talk about a hype of fifty times, then I don’t know if it is still a hype.”
