What do the numbers say? Winning for Telstar would be a huge stunt

Based on statistics, we look ahead to the 21st round in the first division. It’s time for the second fishing derby of the season: FC Volendam against Telstar. Will the White Lions end the undefeated series of Het Nieuwe Oranje?

Quick goals:
Both teams have managed to score quickly in the fishing derby several times. In Volendam this happened seven times; four times by FC Volendam and three times by Telstar. Bert Steltenpool scored the opening goal within two minutes in 2016. Joey Veerman, Charles Dissels, Co Stout, Rihairo Meulens (all FC Volendam), Jeffrey Ket, Jamal Dibi and Nico Jonker also scored within five minutes.

Unbeaten run:
Before the winter break, FC Volendam was working on an unprecedented series. Since the home defeat against ADO Den Haag (1-3), the eel farmers have been unbeaten for eighteen league games. Because of that series, Volendam is the leader with three points ahead of Excelsior. The club record stands at 21 matches in a row without a loss (’69/’70).

FC Volendam – Telstar can be heard live via this website on Sunday afternoon. Kick-off in the fishing village is at 12:15 PM.

Looking for a win:
At Telstar they are jealous of Sunday’s opponent’s series. The White Lions have already failed to win nine league games. Since October 18, the game after the fishing derby in Velsen-Zuid, Andries Jonker’s team has been waiting for a three-pointer. However, Kozak Boys and Spakenburg were defeated in the KNVB Cup after extra time.

History:
The fishing derby was played 32 times in Volendam. The home team was stronger than Telstar more than half of the times. FC Volendam stepped off the field eighteen times with three points. The Velsenaren succeeded eight times, most recently in 2017 (3-4), and six times it ended in a draw. Of the last seventeen games at De Dijk, Telstar won only two.

Last two times:
On April 25, FC Volendam and Telstar met for the last time in Volendam. It then became 2-0 for Wim Jonk’s team by goals from Martijn Kaars and Lequincio Zeefuik. With a 1-0 score Calvin Twigt received his second yellow card, but that was not fatal for the Volendam team. Earlier this season FC Volendam also beat Telstar. In Velsen-Zuid it was a big result: 2-5.
