What Boris Becker asks himself before the Kerber comeback

At the beginning of March, Angelique Kerber became a mother for the first time. Nevertheless, the 35-year-old wants to return to the tennis court soon. Boris Becker would be happy about that.

The German tennis legend spoke about Kerber’s upcoming comeback in the “Eurosport” podcast “Das Gelbe vom Ball”: “It’s incredibly great news that the last German number one, the last German Wimbledon winner, is coming back.”

He didn’t want to write them off at all, citing Kim Clijsters, Serena Williams and Caroline Wozniacki as motivating examples. The latter is a “mother of two children” and “played a fantastic US Open”. So everything is possible.

Nevertheless, the 56-year-old asked himself a few questions: “Does she have the patience, does she have the stamina? Does she have the nerve to accept one or two defeats at the beginning in order to then have match practice with a view to the grass season?”

Kerber would like to be back on the court for the first time at the United Cup, which takes place in Perth from December 29th to January 7th, and would also like to take part in the Australian Open shortly afterwards.

There could also be a “dream team” at the United Cup if Kerber actually serves together with Alexander Zverev. “I’m full of anticipation and can’t wait to see Angie on the tennis court again. And if that happens with Sascha (Alexander Zverev, editor’s note) for Germany at the United Cup, I’ll be the first spectator,” said Becker happily.

Kerber himself recently explained: “A lot will certainly be different when I return, not least because of my role as a mother. But I want to try everything and accept the challenge.” The 35-year-old won three Grand Slams in her career and was at the top of the tennis world rankings for a total of 34 weeks.
