Westtoer and Poperinge are launching a new walking route

The west corner city wants to radiate cosiness, hospitality and geniality. That is why Poperinge puts its sights, regional products, authentic folk cafes, gastronomic treats and the local color that characterizes the border region in the spotlight during the renewed walk. The walkers also get to know the great stories of the hop city.

Sheet, hop and resting place

Poperinge played an important role in the flourishing cloth industry during the Middle Ages. The well-earning merchants brought in enough money to immediately build three imposing Gothic churches, which still dominate the skyline. Later, hops became the export product. Poperinge was one of the most important centers of hop cultivation. The beer wall in the Hop Museum shows the collection of beers made with Belgian hops. Several mansions and former hop warehouses are reminders of this heyday. During World War I, POP, as Poperinge was called by the British soldiers, was at a safe distance from the front. The soldiers took a breather.

Engraved rivets

The city walking route has been expanded from 2.3 to 5.5 km and now also passes ‘t Oud Kerkhof, the Quintens walk, the Vroonhof site and the Burgraaf Frimoutpark. The city walking route was signposted with about 178 metal rivets in the ground. The silhouette of a hop cone is engraved on it.
