The alumni association of the West Point Military Academy has canceled a ceremony in honor of the Oscar winner Tom Hanks. The actor is considered a long -time advocate of veterans and had supported Joe Biden in his election campaign against Donald Trump in 2020.

Planned honor for Hanks

“This decision allows the academy to focus on its core mission. Prepare cadets, to fight, fight and win as officers in the most fatal force in the world, the US Army,” said Oberst a. D. Mark Bieger to Alumni, as the “Washington Post” reports.

Hanks was to receive the Sylvanus-Hayer Award on September 25th. An award for “outstanding citizens” who have not studied in West Point, but embody the motto of the academy “Duty, Honor, Country”. In addition to the award, a parade was also planned. It is unclear whether Hanks will receive the price at a later date or whether it was finally canceled.

When the alumni association announced Hanks as a winner in June, it highlighted its roles in films about US soldiers, including “The Soldier James Ryan”, “Forrest Gump” and “Greyhound”. His producer credits for the World War II miniseries “Band of Brothers” and “The Pacific” were also mentioned.

Commitment to veterans and military history

Hanks’ use for veterans was also emphasized. He supported the construction of the Second World War I in Washington, DC was committed to a national Eisenhower monument. And as a national chairman, led a donation campaign for the National Wwii Museum in New Orleans.

“Tom Hanks has done more for the positive representation of the American soldier, more for the care for veterans, their supervisors and their families, and more for the American space program and all government branches than many other Americans,” said Robert A. McDonald, former Minister for Veteran Matters and CEO of the alumni association. Hanks himself described the award as important.

Political headwind

However, Hanks could now get into political turbulence. In 2020 he took part in an election campaign event for bidges, which Trump defeated in the presidential election. A choice in which Trump made unaffected claims of election fraud.

Weeks after January 6, 2021, when Trump supporters stormed the Capitol, Hanks moderated the TV special program “Celebrating America”, which was organized by the bidden-inauguration committee and relied on unity. In 2016, President Barack Obama Hanks honored the Medal of Freedom.

Simultaneous Trump staging

In the meantime, Trump gave a speech in May in front of West Point cadets in which he again described his election on November 5, 2024 as the “biggest election victory”. “We won the Swing States. We won everything. That gives us the right to do what we want to make our country great again.”

On the same day on which the email was sent through the cancellation, Trump also ordered the Department of Defense to rename into “Department of War”. He told reporters that this will send this “a message of victory and strength”, as the AP news agency reported.
