West Flemish farmer’s son built a loft on top of a brewery in the heart of the city | Insane house

AMAZING HOUSEWe may never have the money to live there ourselves, but we all like to look at and dream of a great house. That’s why we show an amazing home every Wednesday. This week it is the loft of the West Flemish landscape architect Steven Delva, which he built on top of a brewery in the heart of Amsterdam and where he surrounded himself with a mini-jungle.

Steven Delva grew up as a West Flemish farmer’s son, but at a young age he decided to take the plunge and move to Amsterdam. After all, he could study landscape architecture there, because that direction did not yet exist with us. At our northern neighbors he managed to realize his dream and today he leads there DELVA Landscape Architecture & Urbanism. The office has more than thirty employees and is internationally known and praised in the world of landscape architecture. Delva is, among other things, the man behind the hyper-futuristic dune casino in Middelkerke.

In 2012, Steven and his partner bought their current home in the heart of Amsterdam. What was then still a sad building, built on the foundations of an old brewery, he transformed into a multifunctional house surrounded by greenery. It’s nothing less than a mini-jungle between a mass of concrete in the center of the city. The old brewery now houses offices and guest rooms that he rents out. In line with his architectural vision, he built a loft on top of the brewery where he lives himself.

Integrity and nature are two core values that recur in his projects and his own home is no exception. “We created a green city in the middle of the city”, as he puts it himself. Virtually every room in the house faces a Japanese maple that brightens up the patio. Delva is also an avid art lover, no wall has been spared.
