Werder Bremen wants to create a permanent monument to their long-time manager Willi Lemke. It is still unclear where the honor could arise.
SV Werder Bremen wants to create a lasting memory of its manager Willi Lemke, who died in August 2024. President Hubertus Hess-Grunewald announced the plans at the general meeting on Sunday, as Radio Bremen reports.
The club is currently examining various options for recognition. The options under discussion are the boules pitch at the Weser Stadium, the future campus or a box in the stadium. The club has not yet made a final decision.
Lemke was manager at Werder Bremen from 1981 to 1999 and shaped the club’s most successful era. Parallel to his work in football, he made a career in state politics and was, among other things, education, interior and sports senator in Bremen. The 77-year-old died unexpectedly last summer.
There were also emotional scenes when Honorary President Klaus-Dieter Fischer was honored. The 84-year-old was honored at the general meeting for his 70 years of continuous membership, as the club announced on Instagram in the evening. Those present rose to give the former club president a standing ovation.
