The events around ex-coach Ole Werner caught the Werder fans at the start of the week-the Bremen club tour less. “It is not the case now that we hit it completely surprisingly,” managing director Clemens Fritz told the “kicker” and may be able to present a successor this week. It seems to be running out on Horst Steffen.

According to information from the “Bild” newspaper, the green-whites received a promise from Elversberg’s long-standing trainer on Tuesday. “We are well prepared and it is our goal that we will introduce a new coach to Friday at the latest,” said Fritz optimistically. The Werder official should be able to comply with the deadline if the conversations continue as well as before. “Sky” also reported in the evening that details could still be clarified. After that, the squad planning for the coming season can finally start on the Weser.

So far, considerations of the player staff have been postponed to the long bank because you had just seen the development with coach Werner come. After he said on Monday that he did not want to extend his contract until 2026, the SVW announced the immediate separation on Tuesday. “That is why we have consciously waited for the planning of the squad,” Fritz told the “kicker”, “because we wanted to have a clarity first and then take the next steps.”

Werder Bremen wants to further develop U19 players

The official already sees “a good scaffolding in the team” and refers to “economic topics” that restrict expensive transfers, as well as “many young talents in our U19, which really played an excellent season.” The young players want to develop in the next few months – something that is one of the great skills of coaching candidate Steffen. “Last summer we hardly had any transfer income – we can’t maintain that every year,” added Fritz. “Then it is important to find good solutions, to take into account our young players – and to see that as a way to develop the team further.”

On the other hand, transfer policy was considered a friction point that is said to have led to the farewell to predecessor Werner. Fritz commented on the “Deichstube”: “I see a development within our squad in the past three years. We have taken steps forward together with Ole. Of course there were always controversial discussions, but in the end all transfer decisions were made together.”

In conversation with the portal, Fritz justified that there has not yet been so much when it comes to transfers for the coming season, “that in the past few weeks there was a certain uncertainty what happens in the position of the head coach.” Fritz told the “kicker”: “We had a lot of conversations with (Ole Werner), and in the past few weeks you could also read something between the lines. (…) We will not go with a trainer in his last contract year. In our view, it was the right way to draw a clean conclusion.

This in turn now seems to be Elversberg’s Steffen, who led the SVE from the regional league to the promotion relegation to the Bundesliga in a good six and a half years. There you missed the jump to the upper house. Steffen’s contract in Saarland is still valid for another year. For a low six -digit sum, however, he should be able to leave the SVE.
