Werder Bremen records a loss for the promotion season: personnel as a cost driver

Bundesliga club Werder Bremen ended the first season after being promoted again with a loss of 3.8 million euros. Klaus Filbry announced this on Sunday as managing director of the spun-off professional football company Werder Bremen GmbH & Co. KG aA at the parent club’s general meeting.

In terms of sales (from 92.8 million to 115.3 million euros), sponsorship (from 17.3 million to 30.7 million euros) and media income (from 22.6 million to 38.2 million euros) there were therefore significant increases due to promotion to the first division. But: “We have an increase of 13.4 million euros in personnel expenses due to the promotion. The Bundesliga team’s player salaries are particularly important here. In the end, taking on manageable economic risks helped us achieve our sporting goal,” explained Filbry.

Werder largely kept the promotion squad together in the summer of 2022 and significantly strengthened it with first division professionals such as Jens Stage, Niklas Stark and Amos Pieper. However, there was hardly any transfer income. That only changed this summer with the sales of Niclas Füllkrug, Ilia Gruev and Niklas Schmidt.

“Against the background of the transfer revenues already achieved in the current 2023/24 financial year, we are confident that we will close this financial year with a positive result that will at least compensate for the deficit of the previous financial year,” said Filbry.
