When it came to possible candidates to leave Werder Bremen last summer, Romano Schmid was at the forefront. Now the offensive man has commented on the speculation surrounding himself.
Until Victor Boniface joined SV Werder Bremen (on loan) before the season, Romano Schmid was the player with the highest market value in the Green-Whites’ squad (estimated at 20 million euros at the time) and was therefore considered a sales candidate so that money could flow into the coffers of the always cash-strapped Bremen team. There were also rumors that Schmid could definitely imagine a move in order to be able to get started at another, perhaps even bigger, club.
But in an interview with “Deichstube”, the Austrian put speculations that went in this direction into perspective.
“It’s actually the same for me every summer. And looking back, I can talk about it better now than in the emotional time back when I was really a bit down – I have to admit that honestly,” he told the club-affiliated portal and emphasized: “I still never said that I wanted to leave Werder.”
The only thing that was clear to him at the time was: “If something comes up, we have to listen to it.” But precisely because he has a market.
Werder Bremen: Schmid had offers, but…
“I’ve been at Werder for a long time and it was never my intention to leave the club. A next step doesn’t necessarily have to have anything to do with Europe. It was more about checking whether there was something that would make a change seem sensible to me,” continued the offensive man, who has been wearing the Werder jersey since the beginning of 2019.
The fact that he hasn’t always seemed at his best lately had nothing to do with the developments before the start of the season. “Because my summer was a bit wild and the team here only came together very late, it may have seemed to the outside world as if I wasn’t fully involved. But that was never the case!”, Schmid corrected.
There were definitely “a few” offers, he confirmed, “including some interesting ones.” But: “In the end it didn’t happen. I’m still very happy at Werder. The impression that I wanted to take the next step came from outside, not from me.”
Schmid’s contract on the Weser runs until 2027.
