Werder Bremen and Football Germany mourn Max Lorenz. The Bremen native died at the age of 86. The 19-time German national player (one goal) became German champion in 1965 and cup winner in 1961 with the Green-Whites. The SVW announced a “loud” minute of silence at the Bundesliga Friday evening game against Union Berlin (8:30 p.m.), and they will also play with mourning ribbon. Legend Lorenz played 287 times for Werder and 81 times for Eintracht Braunschweig, where he spent the last three years before retiring in 1972.

“With Max Lorenz we are losing one of Bremen’s greatest football idols of all time. His death makes us deeply sad,” said Bremen’s President Dr. Hubertus Hess-Grunewald praised Lorenz’s achievements and added: “Max always felt connected to SV Werder and was a figurehead for our club until the end. The title wins with Werder and the World Cup successes with the national team are evidence of his extraordinary achievements as a footballer. In addition, his humorous, cheerful character and his incredibly positive charisma have earned him a lot of sympathy and friendships, not only in football bestowed. The fact that he can no longer be with us leaves a big gap. Our condolences go out to his family.”

Managing director Klaus Filbry explained: “The news of Max Lorenz’s death fills us all with great sadness. We salute his extraordinary life’s achievements and his services to Werder. His identification with our club and with the city of Bremen was extraordinary. Max Lorenz achieved great things as a footballer and was also an outstanding representative of SV Werder afterwards. We mourn with his family.”
