Werder Bremen’s Marvin Ducksch hopes that strike partner Niclas Füllkrug will stay in the Hanseatic city after his own contract extension. “I hope he sees it the same way I do: that we’ve built something up here. That we’re not at the end of our path yet. I think he knows what he has here in Bremen,” said the 29-year-old in a media session on Thursday. Füllkrug and Ducksch were the most prolific Bundesliga duo last season with a total of 28 goals.
“Everyone knows: He is a German international. It is clear that there is interest in him. I also believe that nobody will be angry with him if he chooses a different path,” emphasized Ducksch. Both would have talked to each other more often on vacation and described their situations. In the TM rumor mill, top scorer Füllkrug is associated with Bundesliga rivals SC Freiburg, FC Bayern and Borussia Mönchengladbach, among others. The 30-year-old, whose contract runs until 2025, has been on the list of many clubs since the World Cup in Qatar at the latest, who can offer him more salary than the rumored 2 million euros he is supposed to earn in Bremen.
Most recently, Füllkrug said that “some things” had picked up speed, “but basically it’s still very calm”. He also expected talks with Werder to intensify after the international break. According to reports, the native of Hanover wants to decide on his future in July. With a market value of 13 million euros, he is the most valuable professional in the Werder squad, while Ducksch (7.5 million) is in third place.
Thanks to an exit clause, Ducksch could have left Bremen early for 7 million euros by June 15. Instead, despite “other options” at the beginning of this week, he extended until 2026. “I always had a goal, a focus. And that was here at Werder Bremen. I’m where I want to be,” he said. The national team is also an issue for him. He will “definitely try to play me in the foreground”. Participation in the home EM 2024 is an “absolute dream”.
