Transfer official
After the free transfers of defenders Niklas Stark (27, Hertha) and Amos Pieper (24, Arminia), Werder Bremen now also reports a departure in central defense: Maik Nawrocki (21) is sold to Legia Warsaw. The Polish club will pay, according to information from the “dyke room‘ a transfer fee of 1.5 million euros.
Born in Bremen with Polish roots, he completed the 2021/22 season on loan for the 15-time Polish champions, who are making use of a purchase option. Legia sporting director Jacek Zielinski described the transfer as “a good move from a footballing point of view and as an investment”. In Warsaw, the new contract is valid until 2025.
Polish media are speculating whether Legia Nawrocki will be able to sell it profitably this summer. If there is an offer from an interested club, Werder would have a so-called “matching right” according to “Deichstube” information, which would enable Werder to buy their own growth for the sum offered. If club X offers 2.5 million euros, for example, Bremen would have a right of first refusal for the same transfer fee. “We’re not entirely helpless,” said Clemens Fritz, head of the scouting department, describing the situation in April.
Nawrocki made 29 appearances in 2021/22, including eight games in Champions League and Europa League qualifiers and the Europa League group stage. “Despite his young age, Maik acts very maturely, has good positional play and makes the right decisions. We see skills in him that we will continue to develop together,” said Legia sporting director Zielinski. Nawrocki has played four games for Poland’s U21 national team so far, wore the youth team jersey for Werder and also played in the regional league for the green and white team.
