Werder Bremen: Johan Mina regrets the move – “Nothing went as expected”

Came in 2020 as a big talent

When Johan Mina moved to Werder Bremen from Ecuador in the summer of 2020, there was great hope on the Weser for the next top South American talent. So far, the cooperation has not been a success story – on the contrary. First of all, the green-white U23s were not allowed to play, then the offensive player was thrown back by injuries and awarded twice. He is currently with his youth club CS Emelec in Ecuador and still has a contract in Germany until 2025. The player, like the club, seems to have finished with the Bremen chapter.

“I regret going to Germany,” Mina said in an interview with the Ecuadorian newspaper “Expreso”. “Because nothing went as expected. Everything happened very quickly, I rushed to make the decision to switch. At the time, Nassib Neme (former president of Emelec; ed.) recommended that I don’t leave, that I only get into the rhythm in the country, but I ignored him. In the end he was right.”

After his arrival in Bremen, Mina initially only had the opportunity to have his foot on the ball on the training ground, since as a non-European he was initially not eligible to play for the U23s and there was still no place for the youngster in the first team. In addition, the corona pandemic hindered settling in. While this is “not an excuse,” Mina says it’s not conducive to development. “I was just training and had no match practice, it wasn’t the same.”

To get that, the left-footed player was first loaned out to GD Estoril Praia and then back to CS Emelec last summer. However, he was unable to bring his talent to the pitch in either Portugal or Ecuador.

As of now, Mina would return to Bremen for the coming season, but already no longer plays a role in the Bundesliga club’s plans. “I know I will not interfere with the team’s plans and I will go back on loan. They’ve already notified me,” the youngster confirmed.
