Werder Bremen faces a decisive cup game against Arminia Bielefeld. After a disappointing second half of the season, a victory is urgently needed.

Werder Bremen is currently anything but round. Instead of qualifying through the league for Europe, the team is deep in the crisis. Only one victory in the last eight games and place twelve in the table lead to great concerns about the European Cup. Now only the DFB Cup remains as a glimmer of hope.

On Tuesday evening, Werder will compete at Arminia Bielefeld in the quarter-finals of the DFB Cup (8:45 p.m./ZDF and Sky). In the current constitution, even this game becomes a challenge. After the clear 0: 5 against SC Freiburg, the problems within the team have become obvious.

Midfield man Romano Schmid criticizes the lack of cohesion and ambition of his team. “At the moment we don’t have the ambition, the last push and the last will to help each other,” said Schmid about the situation in the team. Werner added that the team troubled in resistance.

In order to tune the players on the important cup game, Werner gave intensive discussions with them. The focus is now on Arminia Bielefeld, which Hannover 96, Union Berlin and Freiburg has already thrown out of the trophy.

“It’s more than just a change from everyday Bundesliga,” emphasized Werner. “It’s a great chance for us.” The Bremeners want to compete almost in the best line -up. Only captain Marco Friedl is still missing due to an interior strain. Jens Stage is fit again after his short assignment in Freiburg and could start.

Marvin Ducksch should replace André Silva, who recently remained lucky. Even if not all returnees are at full rhythm, Werner looks forward positively: “It is good that we have more options again.” Coach Ole Werner can at least draw from the full. Except for defense chief Marco Friedl, all players are available to the team boss.

The match against Bielefeld could be trend -setting for Werder Bremen – both sporty and for the atmosphere in the team.
