Werder Bremen – Füllkrug about Markus Beginning: Relationship “not optimal”

Under Werner top performers

For Niclas Füllkrug things are going well again at SV Werder Bremen: The 28-year-old has played seven goals in the past five games, 447 of 450 possible minutes under new coach Ole Werner. In the “Sport1” show “Machine seeker double pass 2. Bundesliga‘ the attacker spoke about his difficult relationship, both athletically and personally, with Werner’s predecessor, Markus Anfang.

“It’s always difficult. As a player you always have to adapt to the new coach. Conversely, it would be wrong. I had some problems there, I think,” said Füllkrug, looking back on his personal relationship at the beginning. The 47-year-old started his job at Werder in June 2021 and had an average of 1.36 points in 14 competitive games by the end of November – in the TM database he was ranked 18th in Werder’s coaching rankings, which are currently held by his successor Ole Werner (average 3.0 in 5 games) is mentioned.

In terms of sport, Beginning was often controversial during his first months in Bremen. At the end of November he voluntarily resigned from his position in the course of the vaccination card affair and later publicly admitted to having cheated with a fake ID.

Filling mug at Werder Bremen under Markus Beginning only rarely used

In the beginning, Füllkrug was only allowed to go the full distance in three of 12 league games, the relationship between coach and offensive power was considered tense and escalated when the player, out of frustration at the lack of playing time coupled with the unsatisfied sporting situation in the dressing room at the time, faced him last October Clemens Fritz, head of professional football, out of sound.

Füllkrug was temporarily suspended after the 3-0 defeat against Darmstadt, and in the subsequent duel with SV Sandhausen he scored his first goal of the season. “I said a lot of unnecessary things that weren’t right,” the right-footer summed up on Monday at “Sport 1”.

“Interpersonal and footballing” it was “not optimal” between the beginning and him. The subject of Markus Beginning is now “finished” at Werder and “it doesn’t matter to us anymore.” At the same time, the attacker praised Coach Werner, “who exudes a lot of sovereignty and calmness and gives you a good feeling on the pitch. We’re all happy about that.”

Under the 33-year-old, Werder recently climbed back up to third place, remained unbeaten in five games and scored 18 goals – Niclas Füllkrug was directly involved in seven of them.
