After a long game of patience, Werder Bremen signed his desired player Isaac Schmidt. After transfer market information, the green-whites had agreed on a loan with Leeds United on Wednesday evening. A purchase option for the 25 years old right -back is said to be included in the deal, the “Telegraph” recently estimated its total volume at 3.5 million euros. The SVW has agreed with the player since the end of July.
Schmidt changed from St. Gallen to Leeds last summer for almost 3 million euros, but only played a subordinate role in the Premier League return. In the Championship, Schmidt was only 71 minutes distributed over twelve missions on the pitch, in the FA Cup he came to 180 minutes. Nevertheless, he was nominated for the national team of Switzerland for the first time in March and was also part of the Nati line -up in June. Its market value is currently being estimated at EUR 2.2 million.
In St. Gallen, where he was involved in 17 goals in 108 games, Schmidt was converted into full -back from the winger. Its regular position is the right side, but it can also be used on the left. In defense with newcomer Maximilian Wöber, Amos Pieper, Olivier Deman and Mitchell wises are missing longer. After the cruciate ligament tear, which should have been used more aggressively after the system change under Horst Steffen anyway, there was no more nominal right -back in the Bremen squad. On Tuesday, Yukinari Sugawara was loaned by FC Southampton.
Felix AGU was planned for the right defense side, which was on the left last season. In addition to rental returnees Deman, Wöber can also be used there. This was also brought from Leeds to the Weser this summer. Most recently, “Sport Bild” had reported that due to the financial situation, the Bremeners only get borrowing. Werder presented five new additions this summer, including Schmidt, of which only Samuel Mbangula is a commitment. However, a purchase option was secured for all loan players.

Werder does not only need reinforcements in defense. In Steffen’s squad, after the departures of Marvin Ducksch and Oliver Burke with Keke Topp and Salim Musah, there are only two center forward. While Topp is looking for its shape, Musah comes from the U19 and is currently not an option for the starting eleven. That is why foreign players Marco Grüll began in the first two competitive games in the storm center. According to the “Sport Bild”, you already had a successor for Ducksch on the Angel, but this should only be sold and not awarded.
There is also a need for action in the central midfield, because in addition to the set Senne Lynen, Jens Stage is missing indefinitely. Leonardo Bittencourt neither showed a good performance against Arminia Bielefeld nor against Eintracht Frankfurt and Skelly Alvero, who came from Olympique Lyon in 2024 for 4.8 million euros, is out. Kaan Cairinen was most recently traded by Sparta Prague for this position. Romano Schmid, the most valuable Bremer, could still leave the club.
