Werder Bremen: Coach Ole Werner takes Roger Assalé to task

Loan player from Dijon

When the loan deal with French second division club Dijon FCO was announced last summer, Werder Managing Director Frank Baumann described attacker Roger Assalé as a “powerful, fast and dribbling offensive player”. However, the 28-year-old has so far failed to give an impression of the strengths mentioned, Assalé has only made six short appearances so far this season.

The signs are currently pointing to farewell and although the Ivorian cannot hope to play in the upcoming away game at Hansa Rostock (Friday, from 6:30 p.m. in the TM live ticker), SVW coach Ole Werner takes him on again Duty.

“It’s up to Roger to bring in his qualities, which lie in one-on-one and his determination, even more consistently and better, in order to maybe work one or the other position forward bit by bit,” the trainer said in the “Weser courierquoted. He can’t blame Assalé in terms of commitment, but “other guys are currently in the lead,” said the 33-year-old, referring to Eren Dinkci and Nick Woltemade. The two youngsters are currently behind the seeded top duo Marvin Ducksch and Niclas Füllkrug, which means that Assalé is only the fifth choice in the North German attack.

The fact that the situation is extremely difficult for the right-footed player is undoubtedly also due to Werder’s sporting highs, which have won six in a row since Werner took office and with Ducksch and Füllkrug have two of the top scorers in league two in their own ranks.

Werder Bremen will most likely not take the option to buy Assalé

Dinkci, Woltemade and Füllkrug have working papers dated to 2023, Ducksch’s contract even runs until 2024. It seems at least questionable that Bremen will use the purchase option for Assalé in the rumored amount of 2.5 million euros at the end of the season under the current conditions .

In the TM community, too, Assalé hardly has any chances of a surprising breakthrough at Werder. “In the end I really feel sorry for the boy. Because he has already proven with the Young Boys that he can be a good player. I think you’ll have to drag it through now,” writes user “Platzwart_1” in the player thread.

I think that’s a nice but unlikely solution. Don’t think that he will now go to the next country where he doesn’t speak the language either. Colleagues of mine who often attend the training also report that he really gives the impression that he just doesn’t get along here as a person. Are only reports but I think there is something to it. Talks almost exclusively with Mbom (French) and is said to have problems even with the simplest English. do me in the end…

Assalé had the best time of his career at BSC Young Boys, for whom he scored 44 goals and 31 assists in 129 games in Switzerland between 2016 and 2019, increasing his market value to 7.5 million euros. After a loan to CD Leganés in the second half of 2019/20, he moved to Dijon for €4 million, where he was relegated last year as the bottom of the table.
